The course

A day including a mixture of lectures and practical sesisons, focussing on different types of natural slates used in the south of England.  There will be a lecture on different types of natural sized slates and fixing methods, to include a brief talk on slate industry history, and including tools, setting out and techniques, followed by workshop sessions on sorting and laying slates, including cutting to hips and valleys, and the use of lime mortar for torching.

   

The tutor

Yusof Abdullah has been working for Fildes Roofing Ltd for 27years. He is a very skilled craftsman, working in all aspects of roofing.  For the last 6 years Yusof has been working in Fildes' Training Company and is accredited to run courses ranging from Diploma level 2 to Heritage Roofing level 3.  Examples of his work are to be seen on some of the display rigs at the centre.

Pete Cullingham has been in the Roofing Industry for over 20 years.  He has a wealth of experience and has worked on a wide range of projects using both slates and tiles. For the past 6 years Pete has been working as tutor in Fildes' training company and he is accredited to run courses from foundation level right through to Heritage Roofing level 3.

Participant information

All tools will be provided, but participants should provide their own safety footwear.

This is an off-site course, taking place entirely at South Coast Roof Training, based in Littlehampton. Participants will be sent directions to the centre on booking.

Fee

£99 per person, to include tuition, teas and coffees and lunch.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.  It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.  The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation. South Coast Roof Training

South Coast Roof Training is based in Littlehampton and is the only roof training centre in the south. They offer a range of courses from NVQ Diplomas for apprentices and those looking for a career in the roofing industry, to company training days and short courses suitable for CPD. It is equipped with a variety of roof rigs and a purpose built classroom, ideal for teaching traditional roofing methods.
