Conservation of Historic Brickwork

The Course

A two day course focusing on the main repair methods and ethics behind brickwork conservation. Time will be spent in the lecture room to give an understanding of how to go about the process of surveying, specifying and carrying out a repair. Topics covered will include common faults, lime mortars, materials (and where to source them) and tools.

Practical sessions will give you the opportunity to mix a variety of different lime mortars, then use these to repoint some brickwork on our purpose built sample walls.

Day 1
Session 1 – Welcome and introductions – Common faults and repair methods.
Session 2 – Mortars and Binders
Session 3 – Mixing mortars (practical)
Session 4 – Cutting out joints and preparing working area (practical)

Day 2
Session 1 – Applying mortar to work area (practical)
Session 2 – Brick and mortar surveying exercise
Session 3 – Finish joints (practical)
Session 4 – Summary and certificates

The Tutor

William Cove has been working with brick, flint and lime throughout his career. He runs a small business based in Chichester, as well as tutoring at various establishments. He continues his own professional development in the conservation sector, currently undertaking a Diploma in Historic Building Conservation.

He has worked on high status buildings such as Hampton Court Palace and The Tower of London as well as numerous local historic and listed properties.

Participant Information

The course will be limited to 6 participants. You should wear warm clothes, overalls or aprons, and stout boots, and bring a notebook and pen. All tools and equipment will be supplied, although participants are welcome to bring along any appropriate tools of their own.

Fee & Refreshments

£260 per person, including tuition, teas and coffees and a light lunch. If you have any other dietary requirements please let us know in advance.
