Things to see and do during your visit

With so much to explore around our 40 acre site, you can embrace the outdoors and learn about the daily life of our rural ancestors.

Activity at the Museum does vary day to day, here are a list of things to look out for during your visit:

  • Explore our collection of  historic buildings – find out how people used to live and work in the rural countryside.
  • Learn how the watermill works, meet the Millers’ and see our Lurgashall Watermill in operation*. You can also have a got a milling with a hand-turned quern
  • Chat with our Bakers at the Newdigate bakehouse*, and on selected days you can try a delicious baked biscuit or bread (subject to availability).
  • Play traditional games in Hambrook Barn have a go at quoits, hoops and other activities.
  • Try hands-on activities in the medieval house from Sole Street
  • See Tudor cooking demonstrations in Winkhurst kitchen and take in the smell of the smoky fire and traditional dishes.
  • Spot our Percheron horses and other farm animals as they carry out their daily chores around the Museum.
  • Wander through the woodland learn about woodland management and explore the woodland trail.

* Our Museum is supported by our wonderful team of volunteers, so our day to day demonstrations and activities can vary. If there is something specific you would like to see during your visit, we recommend calling on the day, after 10am when we will have all our staff and volunteers on site for the day.

Why not join as Annual Members and come back to the Museum as many times as you like for a whole year? Membership pays for itself in just three visits and includes standard daytime admission to the Museum.

Knucker the Dragon Activities

Take part on one of our seasonal trails to help you find your way around. Can you complete all the activities and tasks during your visit?

Knucker the Dragon Trails

Dinky Dragon’s Toddler Club

Calling all curious explorers aged 2-4 years old, bring your adult for a rip roaring adventure at the Weald & Downland Living Museum. Knucker, our resident dragon puppet will take you on a journey of discovery exploring a different theme inspired by the Museum every week. Expect stories, songs, ‘make and take’ crafts and plenty of hands-on, free range fun in the great outdoors!
