Of the buildings on a farmstead, the most important was the barn, for threshing out the grain and storing unthreshed sheaves and threshed straw. The Museum has a number of cattle sheds and cart sheds, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries as earlier examples tended not to be built well enough to survive. Granaries are from the 17th century onwards, and prior to this valuable farm produce was normally stored within the house.
