Fair will take place in the Jerwood Gridshell space at the Weald &
Downland Open Air Museum, which is part of the Building Limes Forum
Annual Conference (for further information see

Below Stairs
Food historian and historic house
consultant Peter Brears will lead a fascinating course entitled 'Below
Stairs' on 8th and 9th July.
Below Stairs is a look beyond the
green baize door at the workings of households from the 16th to 20th
Centuries, and includes site visits to Cowdray Ruins at Midhurst on day
one, and Petworth House on day two to view kitchens, the ice house,
cellars and other parts not normally open to the public.
This course is a must for anyone
involved in the interpretation of historic houses, as well as those with
a general interest in historic households and how they were run. Peter
Brears has a wealth of knowledge and experience, working on important
projects including Hampton Court Palace, Petworth House, Woburn House
and Uppark, to name but a few.

The Museum will again be the venue for Continuing Education courses
organised by the University of Sussex. There will be an interesting
range of topics, and some of the courses will include field trips. The
courses are open to all comers. Completion of these courses entitles
participants to Higher Education “credits”, which can be
used to demonstrate learning, or even to
bring into longer certificate or degree programmes. Details of the courses

Drawing and painting workshops this summer.
Come and improve your artistic skills in the beautiful
museum site or in our local area. Tutored by professional painter Gordon
Rushmer, you will be given in-depth tuition in all watercolour
techniques and introduced to the full range of materials tranquil
surroundings. We have courses to accommodate
both complete beginners and experienced artists, and our small groups
enable one-to-one tuition. Details
The museum is part of a large Heritage Lottery Fund
project whose aim is to celebrate the distinctiveness of the Weald
Forest Ridge landscape and its buildings. This year we offer three day
schools designed to enhance participants' recognition of the special
features characterising buildings of the Weald AONB and distributed
through the Weald and Downland region.

The Museum is a centre of excellence in Building Conservation and
provides an expanding range of learning
programmes from the academic to the practical and recreational.
Enquiries about these, and other courses yet to be announced, to Diana Rowsell,
Head of Learning. We are very receptive to the needs of the
conservation industry and set up bespoke courses for small groups of
surveyors, architects and conservation officers on request. Please let us

HELM
Established in 2004, Historic
Environment - Local Management is a partnership project led by English
Heritage and supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport,
Communities and Local Government and the Department for Food, Environment
and Rural Affairs.
The aim of the project is to share best
practice and build capacity and confidence in those dealing with the
historic environment. HELM provides and funds written information and
training in a number of ways.

Use Of Traditional Materials And Processes
A wide range of practical workshops and seminars for surveyors,
architects, craftsmen and anyone else with a keen interest in building
conservation. All courses are suitable for Continuing Professional
Development (CPD).

West Dean College, English Heritage and the Weald and Downland Museum

All the speakers are experts in their fields, who will share
their knowledge on these evenings in a relaxed talk, with illustrations.
Questions are welcome. The talks will start at 6.30pm, with tea/coffee and cake
served from 6pm. The ticket allows entrance to the museum site from 4pm on the
day of the talk.
All talks cost £10 per person including refreshments.
A seasonal series of experience days aimed at the enjoyment of working
with heavy horses and becoming familiar with the equipment and skills involved.Come and have fun and get to know these wonderful creatures!
