Join us as we explore the calming relaxation benefits of sound.

On the evening of Monday, 22 September we will be hosting a sound bath session in our Museum Waterside Café, from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Doors will open at 6pm for the session to start promptly at 6.30pm, which will last approximately 75 minutes. Then you can enjoy time to refresh with a herbal tea (included in your ticket) and reflect on your journey before travelling home.

Deep relaxation sound journey sessions using a range of gongs, singing bowls and gentle percussion for health and well-being.

 

Benefits of Sound therapy

  • Sound therapy can have a wide range of health benefits. It works very well as a form of preventative self care. One of the biggest benefits is stress reduction and reducing the negative impact that long term tension can have on both the mind and body.

Rebalance yourself with sound!

  • Listen to the calming sounds of a variety of gongs, singing bowls and gentle percussion in a therapeutic sonic experience for relaxation and wellbeing. Enjoy our beautiful and inspiring location to add to your experience, making it immersive and memorable. Sounds will be played in a sensitive and and intricate manner using a range of multi-sensory techniques to providing a different and personal approach, allowing for a deep level of meditation and connection with sound.

Sound and well-being

  • Its important to make time for ourselves, and to look after our wellbeing. These sessions use a range of large gongs, played in a gentle and sensitive manner to help achieve a deep sense of relaxation and meditation which can help to restore the mind and body back to equilibrium.

What to expect

  • You will rest comfortably on the floor and listen to the sounds. You are not expected to do anything physically active, the session is aimed at relaxation and rest. Participants normally stay awake but reach a deep dreamlike state which can be extremely therapeutic for both the mind and body.

No previous experience is needed, and all will be explained before the session.

 

What to bring

You will need to bring a yoga mat, pillow, 2 blankets, an eye covering and a bottle of water. It is important that you are comfortable and warm, so bring whatever you need.

 

Activity leader: Jez Smith, FRSA – Soundscape Therapist

Jez is an experienced sound therapist and historical musician, playing music for over 40 years, researching sound for 25 years and playing the gongs for 10 years. He provides sound bath sessions in a wide variety of inspiring settings, with a strong focus on connecting sound with both the natural and historic built environments. As a partially deaf musician he has developed a range of multi-sensory listening skills which he uses to create a unique playing style. This approach encourages a heightened sense of awareness of vibration and resonance to create a deep, immersive and profound sense of relaxation and meditation. He promotes the benefits of multi-sensory, or “engaged” listening skills which can have far reaching benefits for our health and wellbeing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has worked with Evelyn Glennie. His venues include Kew Gardens, Wisley Gardens and St Pauls Cathedral.

Contraindications: The sound bath sessions are not suitable for people with seizures, epilepsy, heart conditions, high blood pressure or early stages of pregnancy (1st trimester).
