Making Paints from the Landscape

Making Paints from the Landscape

The Course

Discover the wealth of naturally occurring colours found in the landscape around the museum which have been used since ancient times. Earth pigments, charcoal, rusty nails, chalk and old bricks can be used, as can bark and berries. We will also consider the tools we can find for mark-making- feathers, twigs and lump-pigment.

In the morning we will source and grind our colours, mixing them with historic binders to create a range of watercolour paints poured into shells, the traditional palette.

In the afternoon we will use our paints to create a medieval tile design, inspired by the buildings and plants around us.

Please be aware that this course involves walking on uneven paths.

The Tutor

Sophie Woodhouse is a historic building conservator, artist and tutor specialising in historic pigments, screen-printing and drawing inspired by medieval art and the natural world.

After attaining a B.A. in Illustration and an M.A. in Renaissance Studies, Sophie studied an apprenticeship in decorative surface conservation and worked on historic buildings and museums around the country. She has taught and teaches at art and restoration schools in Sussex, Shropshire, Somerset, London and Essex.

Sophie is passionate about introducing medieval art to students, connecting art and nature and giving students the confidence to explore and experiment, as well as teaching traditional skills.
