Introduction to Marbling
The Course
This workshop is designed and structured for students who have had no previous experience, and for those with some knowledge of the crafts associated with decorative paint techniques to gain a more in-depth understanding of the ancient art of faux marbling
Over the course of the day, you will become comfortable and proficient in using the paints and glazes used to master these skills. You will be introduced to acrylic scumble glazes, varnishes and colourants, used extensively by professionals around the world, and shown their correct use and applications in a variety of situations
Before starting on the practice boards Simon will give a detailed explanation of the correct use of primers and base coats to be applied to a variety of surfaces and you will then prepare and basecoat the sample boards. Whilst the boards are drying, Simon will give a demonstration of some of the marbling techniques that you will be introduced to.
You will then be guided through the different stages used to create professional looking faux marbling effects in a number of styles and then shown the correct use and application of varnishes and sealants used to protect and enhance your work.
The Tutor
For more than 35 years tutor Simon Nobs has worked on decorative paint conservation and restoration commissions across the UK, France and Switzerland. His involvement in teaching started 25 years ago in Adult Education and for over ten years now, he has been developing and running courses at his studio in Hythe, Kent.
The ancient skills of wood graining and marbling have been placed on the Red List for endangered crafts and now, working closely with Heritage Crafts Association, Simon is pursuing his passion to pass on these ancient skills to the next generation of heritage craft students and professionals.
