Families are invited to embark on an unforgettable journey into the past with Storytelling Through Time, an immersive Home Education workshop series at the Weald & Downland Living Museum.

Led by expert author and storyteller Dawn Nelson of The Bard School, these engaging sessions are designed for children aged 8+ and bring history vividly to life through storytelling, hands-on craft activities and interactive exploration.

Dawn Nelson, known as The Bard Dawn, is based in the South Downs and draws inspiration from Celtic, British and Scandinavian mythology. Her work uses storytelling to reconnect people with nature, folklore and the landscapes that shape our cultural heritage, and she has worked extensively with museums, heritage sites and community organisations across the South of England.

A Day of Discovery

Each Home Education Day is carefully structured to offer a balance of guided learning and independent exploration. Mornings are dedicated to themed storytelling workshops, where children can take part in creative, hands-on activities inspired by different historical periods.

In the afternoon, families can continue their learning journey by becoming Museum Detectives, exploring the site using specially designed worksheets that encourage curiosity and bring history to life across the Museum’s historic buildings and landscapes.

“Storytelling is such a powerful way to bring history to life,” said Hilary Cunningham, Learning & Programming Manager at the Museum. “These workshops give children the opportunity to explore the past through imagination, creativity and hands-on discovery, helping them to build a deeper connection with history, folklore and the world around them.”

Workshop Dates

Each session is limited to 15 children, ensuring a supportive, engaging and high-quality learning experience. Children must be accompanied by an adult, with one adult able to support up to three children.

Blending creativity, history and hands-on discovery, Storytelling Through Time offers a unique opportunity for young learners to connect with the past in a meaningful and memorable way.
