Storytelling Through Time: Saxon Stories
Immersive, hands-on storytelling through time workshops. Learn about the history of stories, tales and fables through interactive activities, take-home crafts and stories around the hearth.
Led by expert author and storyteller, Dawn Nelson, children aged 8+ can get hands-on with history and be inspired by stories through time.
This month, you will be transported back to the world of the Saxon Storytellers (known as Scops) to learn all about how they held the history and stories of their chiefs, entertained the Mead Hall and inspired the warriors. Gather around the hearth to hear the stories that would have been told over 1000 years ago!
Activities include:
- Learn to lucet (Saxon braiding)
- Create an illuminated letter in traditional Saxon style
- Listen to Saxon stories around the hearth in our Saxon Hall House
After these Saxon activities, you can explore the rest of our buildings with our ‘Museum Detectives’ Worksheets!

About the Tutor
Dawn Nelson, The Bard Dawn, lives within the beautiful South Downs. The focus of her work is Celtic, British and Scandinavian mythology, although many other traditions also inform her practice. Through storytelling she hopes to encourage a reconnection to our natural selves, through the lessons present within stories, folklore, nature and the landscapes they inhabit. She has worked with multiple museums, heritage sites, community organisations and charities across the South of England.
