Victorian Voices at Weald & Downland Living Museum

Storytelling Through Time: Victorian Voices

Immersive, hands-on storytelling through time workshops. Learn about the history of stories, tales and fables through interactive activities, take-home crafts and stories around the hearth.

Led by expert author and storyteller, Dawn Nelson, children aged 8+ can get hands-on with history and be inspired by stories through time.

This month, you will travel back to the Victorian era, a time of radical change and advancement! You will learn all about the Victorian ‘story collectors’ who fought to keep the old stories alive, and begin your own journey as a story collector.

Activities include:

  • Decorate a story journal with stamps or simple lino cuts
  • Learn about the stories that filled the Victorian world
  • Listen to Victorian stories around the hearth in our house from Walderton

After these Victorian activities, you can explore the rest of our buildings with our ‘Museum Detectives’ Worksheets!

About the Tutor

Dawn Nelson, The Bard Dawn, lives within the beautiful South Downs. The focus of her work is Celtic, British and Scandinavian mythology, although many other traditions also inform her practice. Through storytelling she hopes to encourage a reconnection to our natural selves, through the lessons present within stories, folklore, nature and the landscapes they inhabit. She has worked with multiple museums, heritage sites, community organisations and charities across the South of England.
