Buildings & Materials Workshops

What building materials did people have access to in the past and how were they used? Let’s take a look on a visit to the Weald and Downland!

Existing workshops are currently under review and ideas for new activities being developed; content can be delivered via workshops, or a series of shorter activities around the site – talk to us about what would suit you.

Workshops

Building Blocks KS1: Indoors

In the Building Blocks workshops pupils have the chance to look at different elements of a building and understand them through a variety of hands-on activities. One session is inside, the other outside and they are designed to complement each other but can also be undertaken independently.

Duration: 45 minutes
Maximum numbers: 15 children

After a quick introduction the group is divided into little teams to sit around the action stations (as many of you will know from the previous version of this workshop). Each child will have the chance to do each hands-on activity, which is designed to enable a better understanding of the elements of how homes were built in the past.

Terrific Trees KS2–KS4

Duration: 90 minutes
Maximum numbers: 15 children

Our ancestors have made use of terrific trees for hundreds of years. Whether in constructing timber frames for a home or other building, making tools or furniture or using the resource to keep warm there is much evidence of it all around us.

During this workshop students will learn how to identify a small number of common species of tree and know some of their characteristics.

They will find out how to work out the age of a tree and why this may be important, as well as discovering different uses of trees that were essential in the past.

The 90-minute session takes the form of a guided walk with some hands-on activities.
