Make a woven top stool

Make a Woven Top Stool

The Course

Learn all the skills required to assemble a stool frame from locally sourced and prepared hardwood components. Once assembled we will explore and experience how these were made, and replicate all the necessary procedures. Day two will undertake the weaving and completing of this traditional piece of furniture. Physical strength is not a pre-requisite, good hand-eye coordination, dexterity and the ability to stand during the course will help. All the procedures are readily achievable, while help and encouragement are given, a certain amount of industriousness is necessary.

The Tutor

With a background in woodwork, woodlands and music Mervyn is an independent demonstrator, maker and tutor covering over twenty years of research and study.

Woodland management provides the raw materials that traditional skills and techniques then convert into items of use. In particular Mervyn creates chairs from historic designs and a small number of musical instruments.

He is very keen to involve others and help them to learn and appreciate the potential of native woodlands and the traditional methods which can be used to make aesthetic quality products for themselves.
