
How to draw in charcoal and pastels
The Course
Learn different mark-making techniques with the ancient drawing medium of charcoal and pastels to depict items and buildings within the museum. In the morning you will gain tips and practice various techniques to explore the medium. Then in the afternoon you will create sketches and drawings in the style of your choice. You may also wish to introduce chalk, coloured pastels or ink into your work.
The Tutor
Kate Tugwell is a professional artist and trained tutor. She runs a range of courses, drop-in classes and one-to-one tuition at various venues in West Sussex.
Participant Information
Materials to bring:
- Cartridge paper sketchpad (minimum A4)
- A few sheets of coloured sugar paper or pastel paper
- Watercolour paper if you wish to add a watercolour wash
- Portable easel and/or board to rest on your lap with bulldog clips
- Pencils, charcoal, chalk or white charcoal
- Plastic and/or putty eraser
- Masking tape
- Baby wipes and/or kitchen roll
Optional:
- Drawing pens and/or Sharpie pens
- Coloured pastels or inks
- Blending sticks or silicone blending tools
- Watercolour paints, paintbrushes, mixing palette and water holder
Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear as we will be walking around the site.
Fee & Refreshments
£80 per person, this includes tuition, tea and coffee. Please let the Museum know in advance if you have any dietary requirements. You can bring your own packed lunch or the café will be open at lunchtime.
