  • Riddles in Runes Trail – Journey the site on a Saxon quest to solve some fiendishly tricky riddles. The only trouble is that the answers are written in Ancient Runes! Can you decipher the code to reveal the answers? Good luck, you might just need it.
  • Meet the Saxon Man in the Woods – 10.30am to 4pm
    Meet our Saxon man who has taken up residence in our Saxon Hall House for the week. Join him to learn how to weave, make stamps on leather, grind corn, explore some Saxon weapons and try on some Saxon clothing. He will also be spending the week making an authentic Saxon bread oven, see how this develops over the week!
  • Saxon Story Telling and Runes Fortune Telling – Monday 26 & Friday 30
    Join our storyteller Dawn Nelson for stories of dragons, quests and Norse gods at 1130,1230 1330 and 1430 in the market square. In between storytelling sessions, have your runes read as Dawn talks you through the Futhark rune row, rolls the runic dice and discovers what the future holds for you!
  • Meet the Cunning Women – 10.30am-4pm, Monday 26 and Friday 30
    The wise and cunning women on be on hand to tell you how to cure all sorts of weird and wonderful illnesses and ailments. Using a mixture of medicine, magic, amulets, folklore and herbs she will have a possible cure for all. Don’t miss her timed theatrical and interactive performances of the ancient 9 herb charm and a cure for being elfshot!
  • A Victorian History Lesson – 10.30am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 3.30pm, Tuesday 27 & Wednesday 28
    Take part in a frightfully strict history lesson all about Saxon spirit animals and make one of your own. Lesson taken by our very own Victorian school mistress.

Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29:

  • Saxon arts and Crafts – 11am-4pm
    Join us for some Saxons arts and crafts. Make a beautiful Saxon inspired brooch, try your hand at lucetting and make and mark a clay pinch pot.
  • Saxon Archaeological Dig
    Calling all budding young archaeologists, we will have a mini archaeological dig where you can unearth some replica Saxon objects and take them to our finds table to measure, record and label your discovery. An opportunity to get hands on and up close to history.

Information for Visitors

The Museum’s 40 acres site, historic gardens and buildings are fascinating places to learn about rural history. Visitors can purchase grain from the Museum shop and feed the hungry ducks on the mill pond. Whilst enjoying the great outdoors and fresh air, look out for our working animals, which can include the Heavy Horses, Sheep and Ducks. There are a number of lovely woodland trails, including a woodland play area for children to explore.

Why not enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch at our waterside café?  Visitors can also bring a picnic as there are plenty of picnic areas available on site.  Takeaway refreshments will also be available from our seasonal Shepherd’s Huts located around the Museum.

Dogs on short leads are welcome and there is ample free parking. Please note that the Museum is a no-smoking site. Visitors with access needs are advised to read our accessibility page in advance of their visit.
