Welcoming InterActiv work experience

Welcoming and supporting InterActiv work experience volunteers from Portsmouth in a new social enterprise project here at Weald & Downland Living Museum

The InterActiv social enterprise project is part of the Portsmouth Charity, Enable Ability. This new project aims to help participants (of whom are registered with a disability or who have additional needs) gain meaningful employment as a result of developing key workplace employability skills. Weald & Downland Living Museum is one of the InterActiv partners and workplace offers and the different teams in the Museum have been incredible hosts, role models and teachers.

Undertaking a range of activities that almost all have never experienced before, participants work through a steep (but carefully supported) learning curve of strands which are assessed and evidenced throughout the three month experience by the personal skills coach, Karen.  With 520 hours ‘clocked up’ from September to December alone, the participants’ work has made a valuable contribution to what we were already offering at the Museum.

We know the benefits that being at Weald & Downland Living Museum can generate. For many of these participants, this has totally turned around their personal sense of well being and their physical and mental health. It has also enabled them to discover skills, interests and  develop positive attitudes to stepping  outside of their usual day to day experiences. Along with valuable employability skills, this experience supported by the Museum, may be prove to be life-changing in many ways.
