Experience Tranquillity Through Sound: Immersive Soundbath Sessions

Step away from the pressures of modern life and into a deeply calming, multi-sensory experience as the Weald & Downland Living Museum introduces a series of restorative Soundbaths sessions set within its unique historic surroundings.

Combining the therapeutic tones of gongs, singing bowls, and gentle percussion with the natural beauty and heritage of the site, these sessions offer a rare opportunity to connect sound, history, and environment in a profoundly relaxing way. Hosted within the striking Downland Gridshell building, the experience is designed to immerse participants in a harmonious blend of architecture, nature, and sound.

 

A Unique Wellbeing Experience

Sound therapy is increasingly recognised as an effective form of preventative self-care. These sessions focus on reducing stress and alleviating the physical and mental effects of long-term tension. Participants simply lie comfortably and listen, allowing the carefully layered sounds to guide them into a restful, dreamlike state.

The first sessions have received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with participants describing the experience as “extraordinary.”

The interplay between the building’s complex acoustic architecture, the gentle resonance of the instruments, and the natural soundscape, complete with birdsong, creates a uniquely peaceful environment. Many attendees noted a surreal sense of stillness, as though time itself had paused.

 

Expertly Led by Jez Smith

The sessions are led by Jez Smith, an experienced musician who has been playing for over 40 years, and qualified sound therapist. With a background spanning contemporary and historical performance, museum education, archaeology, and sound therapy, Jez brings a distinctive interdisciplinary approach to his work.

He holds diplomas from the British Academy of Sound Therapy and the College of Sound Healing, and has extensive experience delivering workshops, lectures, and immersive sound experiences. Through his work in Ancient Sacred Sounds, Jez explores the therapeutic potential of sound, while his Playing In Time project focuses on historical music and research.

“It is a great honour to have the opportunity to present the sound meditations in such a unique setting. The iconic curved design of the magnificent Gridshell allows the sounds to swirl around the building and the participants, coupled with the tranquil location and therapeutic sounds of the gongs to make it a beautiful and powerful experience.” said Jez Smith.
