Gateway Project Update

By 15 September 2016January 26th, 2021No Comments

Visitors to the Museum will have noticed our exciting new Gateway Project buildings by the entrance are developing at a fast pace, and we are endeavouring to keep disruption to a minimum for our visitors.

This wonderful new cluster of buildings will provide a welcoming new visitor centre, café, shop and community space from spring 2017 – watch the project’s progress on our live webcam (broadcasting live on weekdays from 9am-5pm).

The erection of the cross laminated frames on the north cluster has now been completed. This has brought the space to life and for the very first time you can gain an insight into the size and the extent of the buildings.

The oak frames for the new shop, reception and catering facilities begun at the beginning of the month and roof work is well underway. The roofing batons have started to be installed and the tiles are on site ready for installation.

Car park reconfiguration

Work to improve our car park started on Monday 5 September. Sections of the car park have been cordoned off in order for the work to be carried out.

Ground works have begun to create the new access road and the works will see access maintained as it is currently until the end of November with restrictions to some spaces as the new access road is constructed.

Thank you for bearing with us as we undergo this exciting new development! See how the new layout will look in this short animation.

Sole Street

The timber frame of our medieval house from from Sole Street was re-erected in June 2016 and work has continued at a steady pace.

Due to the frame “spreading”, the roof has been strengthened following advice from a structural engineer. This work is almost complete and the Kentish peg tiles have begun to be applied.

Daubing of the building’s wattle panels has begun and is being carried out by a team of volunteers, working alongside Museum staff. The flint masons will return at the end of the month to finish the brick paviour floor.

Fundraising – can you help us with the final push?

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded the Museum £4million towards our project. To date, we have secured funding and pledges totalling £1.1million from grant-making trusts and our supporters. We are very grateful for this fantastic show of support but there is still more to do!

If you are able to help us by giving a donation – however large or small – please visit our JustGiving page or download a donation form. Alternatively, if you’d like to be part of the project, simply sponsor a beam (£500), tree (£150) or roof tile (£50) – find out more here.

Until next time
