Make a Three-legged Stool: Introduction to Chair Making
The Course
This course acts as an introduction to the techniques and skills needed for chair making. The day begins with a discussion on different seating constructions and designs. A short foray into the museum woods will explore sustainable management of woodlands for timber requirements and the artistic potential of using natural form, shape and texture.
Using traditional tools and techniques students then create an elegant stool to take home, gaining the experience and knowledge needed to progress to creating their own original designs acting as the ideal stepping stone for chair making potential.
The Tutors
With a background in woodwork, woodlands and music Mervyn is an independent demonstrator, maker and tutor covering over twenty years of research and study.
Woodland management provides the raw materials that traditional skills and techniques then convert into items of use. In particular Mervyn creates chairs from historic designs and a small number of musical instruments.
He is very keen to involve others and help them to learn and appreciate the potential of native woodlands and the traditional methods which can be used to make aesthetic quality products for themselves.
