Introduction to Pole Lathe Turning

The Course

An introduction to wood turning on the traditional pole lathe. A friendly and informal course during which participants will have the opportunity to use traditional tools and to turn simple objects.

The Tutor

Mark Allery is a full time pole lathe turner and greenwood worker, and regularly demonstrates at the Museum. A member of the Association of Pole Lathe Turners and of the Sussex and Surrey Coppice Group. Mark became involved in greenwood working through conservation work, particularly the Lynchmere commons near Haslemere where he lives and where he is now the site manager for the mixed woodland and heathland site. In addition to pole lathe turning Mark also makes besom brooms, hay rakes, a range of coppice products and burns charcoal.

Participant Information

Please indicate on your booking form if you are left-handed, as you will have to use a left-handed axe.
The course will take place outside, so please wear clothing suitable for the weather. Please wear sturdy footwear. Feel free to bring your own tools if you have them.

Fee & Refreshments

£75 per person, inclusive of tuition, materials and use of tools. Tea and coffee are available. The café will be open or you may like to bring a packed lunch.
