Inspired by the Museum: Sketching Animals

The Course

Learn expressive, gestural and continuous line drawing techniques – useful when drawing animals from life. In the morning you’ll practise a number of sketches of the animals around the museum (or from photos if the weather is poor). Then in the afternoon we will look at how to make marks to create the texture of fur or feathers and how to improve your drawings in the style of your choice. You may also wish to introduce colour using coloured pastels, pencils or watercolour.

The Tutors

Kate Tugwell is a professional artist and trained tutor. She runs a range of courses, drop-in classes and one-to-one tuition at various venues in West Sussex.

Participant Information

Materials to bring:

• Cartridge or watercolour paper (minimum A3 – the larger the better!)
• Few sheets of coloured sugar paper or pastel paper
• Portable easel and/or board to rest on your lap with bulldog clips
• Plastic and/or putty erasers
• Long stick
• Masking tape
• Scissors
• Stiff paintbrush
• Blending sticks or silicone blending tool
• Baby wipes and/or kitchen rollOptional:
• Chalk or white charcoal
• Bottle of drawing ink with brushes, a palette and a water holder
• Pastel fixative
• Camera or I-Pad in case the weather forces us indoors

Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear as we will be walking around the site.

Fee & Refreshments

£75 per person, this includes tuition, tea and coffee. Please let the Museum know in advance if you have any dietary requirements. You can bring your own packed lunch or the café will be open at lunchtime
