Celebrate Mothering Sunday at the Weald & Downland Museum

Mothering Sunday is a fantastic time to visit the Museum, with new-born lambs and spring buds bursting into you enjoy the South Downs in springtime.

Explore historic buildings, see brewing and baking in the authentic Tudor kitchen, listen to period music, plus meet the Shire horses and traditional breed farm animals.

Freshly prepared Simnel cake, which would have been traditionally baked for Mothering Sunday as a mid-lent treat, will be found in c1890s Whittaker’s Cottages from Ashtead.

Historical demonstrations at the Museum will help you to discover 600 years of rural life through a range of activities including:

  • Weaving
  • Spinning
  • Rag rugging
  • Victorian Sunday tea
  • Tudor cooking

Historic Clothing Exhibition

From 15- 20 March the Museum’s Historic Clothing Exhibition will be on display in the Upper Hall from Crawley.

This exhibition focuses on the clothing of the ordinary, working rural men and women who would have lived and worked in the Museum’s buildings.

Researchers and volunteers will explain and demonstrate needlework techniques throughout the day.

Courses Revisited Exhibition

During your visit you are welcome to attend the Museum’s Courses Re-visited exhibition, which will be held in the Jerwood Gridshell space.

The exhibition will feature items created by previous course participants and tutors, and will give visitors the opportunity to discuss the Museum’s ‘Traditional Rural Trades & Crafts’ and ‘Historic Building Conservation’ course programmes with members of the Adult Education team.
