Faces of the South Downs

The Museum hosted ‘Faces of the South Downs’, a special exhibition by photographer Anne Purkiss, in the Museum’s Downland Gridshell Building in August 2015.

The exhibition features a series of portraits of people whose lives are connected with the landscape of the South Downs National Park.

The collection of photographs starts in 2002, when plans for the creation of a South Downs National Park were announced.

The first series of pictures was shown in a touring exhibition in 2005/06. Ten years later, with new portraits, the ‘Faces of the South Downs’ project has become a record and a social document of people and landscape at a time of change.

Anne captured Museum staff in a series of portraits of people whose lives are connected with the landscape of the South Downs National Park.
