Come and bless the Museum’s orchard at one of our new winter Wassailing events!
Visitors on Saturday 20 January can watch and take part in traditional and craft activities with a wassailing theme between 12pm and 3pm.
Sorry sold out: Wassailing in the orchard is free but places are limited and must be pre-booked at one of the three 50-minute sessions: 1pm, 2.15pm or 3.30pm. Pre-booked guests will be led on a route, with song and short performances, to the orchard. In the orchard an apple tree will be decorated – there is a ceremony with bread, salt and cider, where the audience joins in with the ‘Wassail’ shout and makes lots of noise with bells, rattles or whistles. These tickets are only valid if used in conjunction with a valid Museum admission ticket or Annual Membership card. A full programme of the day, with details of how to book places, will be online in mid-December.
Wassailing Feast – Why Not Join Our Evening Celebration?
Tickets are on sale for our Wassailing Feast on the evening of Saturday 20 January 2018. Enjoy a four-course apple-themed meal for £45 per person, with all profits going to our registered charity.
Get into the Wassail spirit with a torchlit procession at 3.30pm from the Museum’s Market Square to the orchard at Bayleaf Farmstead, with song and short performances. In the orchard you can join in with the ‘Wassail’ shout and make lots of noise to bless our trees by singing and shooing away the bad spirits. A blessing will be performed; slices of toast will be tied to apple tree branches and cider poured over the tree roots. The ceremony is said to bless the trees to produce a good crop in the forthcoming season.
There will be entertainment and making merry in the true spirit of wassail! Booking is essential – tickets £45 per head. Tables of 2-12 can be booked.
***SORRY – booking is now closed for the Wassailing Feast***
