Sussex Past (the Sussex Archaeological Society) opens six museums in Sussex, including the celebrated Fishbourne Roman Palace near Chichester. Its other properties are Lewes Castle and Anne of Cleves House (both in Lewes), Michelham Priory (near Hailsham) and Marlipins (Shoreham) and Priest House (West Hoathly). Fishbourne is famous for its collection of first century mosaics and for being the only known Roman palace in Britain. Lewes Castle was one of the first castles built during the Norman Conquest and lies in the heart of historic Lewes. Michelham Priory is a beautifully tranquil site surrounded by one of the biggest medieval moats in England.

bullet The West Sussex Past GatewayThe Gateway brings together 28 heritage & other data bases listing over 2 million books, documents, films, objects, photographs & pictures belonging to archives, museums, public libraries, societies and universities. To improve access to these rich collections West Sussex County Council Library Service and 13 other organisations formed a consortium to create this new portal website, made possible by £40,000 of Heritage Lottery funding.

The Gateway is free of charge and easy to use. It employs revolutionary new software (DScovery) to enable simultaneous searching of the databases. Quick Search or Advanced Search options are available. The Links page includes details of over 300 websites related to West Sussex and/or heritage matters under these headings: Archives, Books & Public Libraries, Film, Family History, Historic Buildings & Gardens, Local Government, Maps, Museums, Newspapers, Photographs, Places to Visit, Publishers, Societies & Organisations, Subjects & Themes Countywide, Towns & Villages and Universities.

bullet RIBA Royal Institute of British Architects website is one of the world's most extensive portals to the world of architecture, designed for anyone who wants to find an architect, understand architecture or learn how to become an architect.  It contains extensive links to other sites relating to architecture.
bullet Looking at Buildings was established by the Pevsner Architectural Guides in association with the Heritage Lottery Fund.  Launched in 2001, this is the latest venture from the Pevsner Architectural guides, and an expanding guide to understanding and exploring the build environment. The site contains hundreds of illustrations, interactives and reference resources for all enthusiasts and many links to other appropriate websites.

Historic Buildings

bullet SPAB, The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings was founded by William Morris in 1877 to counteract the highly destructive 'restoration' of medieval buildings being practised by many Victorian architects. Today it is the largest, oldest and most technically expert national pressure group fighting to save old buildings from decay, demolition and damage.
bullet The National Trust is responsible for many properties of historic significance across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and for magnificent fine and decorative art collections. bulletDomestic Buildings Research Group (Surrey) 
They study old houses, cottages and other domestic and farm buildings, mainly in Surrey, and have recorded more than 3,800 buildings. Reports are not published, but copies are deposited in the National Buildings Record of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England at Swindon, and also in the Surrey Record Office at Woking on closed access (i.e. not available to the public)
bullet Timber Framed Houses Website
This site is a starting point for students and anyone else interested in old houses. It describes the history of timber-framed houses in England and Wales, their method of construction and the people who lived in them, starting with the 13th Century and ending with the 19th. The emphasis is not on Great Houses or Stately Homes but on the simpler dwellings of cottagers, merchants and yeomen, similar to those at the Museum.
