Traditional as Radical: How the Weald & Downland inspired a contemporary design studio (Ticketed)
Sebastian Cox’s earliest memory is of a family visit to the Weald and Downland Museum when he was three. He has continued to visit the Museum, through his early years, teens and into adulthood; for both pleasure and for work. Sebastian cites the Museum as a huge source of inspiration for his award-winning work, encouraging him to employ a simple palette of ancient materials, worked with traditional tools. In this talk, Sebastian will discuss how he is combining the old and the new. Hear how this unique open air museum has shaped his approach to materials and aesthetics to create an innovative, contemporary design studio.
Sebastian Cox is a furniture designer and maker, based in south London. Sebastian founded his workshop and design studio in 2010 on the principle that the past can be used to design and make the future. He is deeply motivated by the way generations of craftsmen have used a limited palette of biodegradable and renewable materials in a creative way, turning them into objects that were functional, simple, understandable and as a result, beautiful.
He hand-picks British wood to work with, including that which he coppices himself. Learning from the past, he has developed an instinct for abundant and overlooked materials, using traditional techniques without nostalgia but with respectful inventiveness and new technology.
He produces collections stocked by Heal’s and The New Craftsmen; he has produced bespoke pieces of design for clients including Sir Terence Conran; and he has recently designed an award-winning kitchen for experts deVOL.
