Spend the morning in our 400 year old watermill. Learn the history of the mill, where it was originally built, its life as a working parish mill and its eventual gift to Weald & Downland, including its reconstruction at the museum. Learn about the different types of mill and their common features. Find out how the nature of a mill’s environment determines the best form of mill for a particular location. Learn how the watermill works, the three key controls at the miller’s disposal, and about the grain that the millers use. Find out how the mill’s controls affect the quality of the flour produced and the best quality that should be aimed at. Then have a go at working in our mill and produce a small bag of flour to take home.
The course leaders are the Museum Millers who work in the Lurgashall watermill on site at the Museum.
All equipment will be provided. It is advisable to wear layers as the Mill can be a cool place to work.
£45 per person, including tuition, materials and coffees and teas.
The Museum café will be open.
The Weald & Downland Living Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses. The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation validated by the University of York.
