Paint in soft pastels

The course

In this one-day course you will make preparatory sketches in pencil from life. Then you will be shown the basics of how to paint using soft pastels and you should leave with at least one finished picture in pastel.

The tutor

Kate Tugwell is a professional artist and trained tutor. She has a dedicated studio in Eastergate, located between Chichester and Arundel.

Participant information

The day is limited to a maximum of 10 participants.

Materials to bring:
A portable easel and board
pastel paper – a pad of assorted colours (minimum A4) or a pastel paper sheet cut to size ie. Fisher 400
2B pencils
soft pastels and/or pencil pastels

Optional –
masking tape
cotton buds
paperstumps or blending sticks
craft knife or pencil sharpener
putty rubber or electric rubber and stencil
stiff paintbrush
kitchen roll
camera or i-Pad

Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear.


£60 per person, this includes tuition, morning coffee and afternoon tea.

You can bring your own packed lunch or the café will be open at lunchtime.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Living Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses. The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation validated by the University of York.
