The course

From a choice of five, select a carving project to complete on this two day hands-on course. You will learn the basics of woodcarving and take home what you have made.

The tutors

Jess Jay has been carving for 30+ years and tutored the subject at South Downs College. He has attended courses by renowned woodcarvers Ian Norbury and Michael Painter, and he now currently tutors at two courses in the Fareham and Waterlooville areas. He is a Member of the Bently Wildlife Carvers and the British Decoy & Wildlife Carvers Association as well as demonstrating at the Museum once a month with the Daywood Carvers. He holds an accredited certificate in tutoring.

John Vardon has been carving for about 20 years, and has attended carving courses by Michael Painter. He is a Member of the Solent Guild of Woodcarvers and Sculptors and also demonstrates at the Museum once a month with the Daywood Carvers. He has designed carvings for Havant Borough Council and Victory Museum in Portsmouth Dockyard. John has also written a series of articles for the beginner carver in the Woodcarving magazine

Participant information

The course takes place in the Gridshell so participants should warm wear suitable clothes and sturdy shoes (no sandals etc). All tools will be provided.

Fee and refreshments

£140 per person, to include tuition, teas and coffees. Please let the Museum know in advance of any special dietary requirements. The Museum café will be open or you can bring a packed lunch.
