The course

Five consecutive days of advanced watercolour tuition, for those who have already given watercolour a try and want to take it further. You will be working out of doors in the Museum environment.

Participant information

The day is limited to a maximum of 10 participants, who will be attending for the full five days. 

Students should bring:

Drawing Board 16” x 24” approx
Artist’s quality watercolours and palette.  Colours to include: Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Vermilion Hue, Alizaron Crimson, Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine, Sap Green, Olive Green, Yellow Ochre, Light Red, Burnt Umber, Sepia plus all your favourites!
All your usual brushes.
Pad, block or loose sheets of Watercolour Paper.  Arches NOT would be ideal.  Size not less than 12” x 16”, the thicker the better.  Any paper likely to cockle will need to be stretched each day.
Roll of masking tape or bulldog clips for fixing paper.
Drawing pencils HB, B
Sponge, sandpaper, toothbrush and candle
Water pot and water container
Scalpel and blades
Something to sit on
Warm clothing (just in case!)
If you want to use an easel – please bring one
Bring all your favourite bits and pieces.

Fee

£250 per person, this includes tuition, morning  coffee, a light lunch and tea.

The tutor

Gordon Rushmer is a professional painter with works in the collections of Her Majesty the Queen, the House of Lords, National Library of Wales, H.M. Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Nelson Mandela, ICI, The Royal Marines, The Royal Netherlands Marine Corps and The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment. He exhibits throughout Europe and the USA and works in both watercolours and oils. His most recent commissions include painting as a war artist in Iraq and Afghanistan for the British and Dutch Marines.
His friendly, practical, down-to-earth approach makes his courses both enjoyable and instructive.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.  It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.  The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
