Monday: The Shepherd’s Church, Didling
A high level walk to this isolated church with lovely views along the way. Seven miles.
Tuesday: Charlton & East Dean
Two lovely downland villages and a pub lunch thrown in! Buildings, nooks and crannies. Seven miles.
Wednesday: Bignor
A truly classic downland walk with Sussex barns, breathtaking views and the odd hill or two! Seven and a half miles.
Thursday: Upwaltham
A short drive will takes us within walking distance of the lovely downland church in this tiny hamlet. Tiles, stone and lichen, all will provide material and much more besides. Six and a half miles.
Friday: Kingley Vale and Stoughton
A yew forest, a Saxon church and more hills!
Seven and a half miles.
The day is limited to a maximum of 10 participants, who will be attending for the full five days. You will be working out of doors on normal Museum days, so be prepared for interested passers-by.
You will need to bring the following equipment:
Walking boots
Warm clothing / Waterproofs / Fleece / Hat / Gloves
Daysack
Sketchbook (cartridge paper if you just want to draw, watercolour paper for the brave!)
Pencils – HB, B and sharpener
Watercolours – small box
2 brushes – No 10 & No 4
Water & pot
Small stool or square of foam rubber
Don’t forget to leave room for the packed lunch!!
£250 per person, this includes tuition, morning coffee, a light lunch and tea.
Gordon Rushmer is a professional painter with works in the collections of Her Majesty the Queen, the House of Lords, National Library of Wales, H.M. Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Nelson Mandela, ICI, The Royal Marines, The Royal Netherlands Marine Corps and The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment. He exhibits throughout Europe and the USA and works in both watercolours and oils. His most recent commissions include painting as a war artist in Iraq and Afghanistan for the British and Dutch Marines.
His friendly, practical, down-to-earth approach makes his courses both enjoyable and instructive.
The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses. The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
