Participants will be taken through the process of marking out, roughing out and finishing a relief stone carving using hand tools. We will also look at where to purchase different stones and tools, chisel sharpening and some of the health and safety issues to do with stone carving.
Will Spankie trained as a sculptor in 1990 at Sir John Cass School of Art in London, and later at Central St. Martins School of Art. He undertakes private and public commissions from his Brighton base, and has experience in teaching courses at a variety of levels.
The course is limited to six participants, who will receive practical tuition and hands-on experience. £70 per person.
Please wear old clothing and wear sturdy footwear. All other materials will be provided.
The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses. The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
