Learn a traditional skill and see that patchwork need not be something you'll do when you've more time, nor need it involve large quantities of expensive material. This day will require a sewing machine and show how recycled fabrics can be used to create an appliqued patchwork cover.
Skills required:
Ability to use a sewing machine and rudimentary hand stitching.
Materials and tools you will need to bring:
Sewing machine (which will need to be PAT tested - you can easily have this done by an electrician or often people can do this through an organisation they work for or have contact to. This cannot be done on the day).
Scissors suitable for cutting fabric
Tape measure/ruler
Card and paper (not essential)
Sewing thread
Sewing needles, embroidery needles, pins
Assorted fabrics; old clothes, sheets, curtains of varying weights and textures
Sufficient wadding for finished project (course is based on designing and making a cot sized quilt but single, double and kingsize quilts can all be made in the same way.)
Buttons, embroidery thread, knitted wool, felt, glittery bits etc.
£45 per person, to include tuition, teas and coffees.
The Museum café will be open or you can bring a packed lunch.
The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses. The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
