The course

You will learn how to carve your own monogram or house number in stone using hand tools. Students will be shown how to draw out their own designs on paper, transfer them on to the stone and carve them using a hammer and chisel. We will also look at different finishing techniques for the lettering and stone.

The tutor

Will Spankie trained as a sculptor in 1990 at Sir John Cass School of Art in London, and later at Central St. Martins School of Art. He undertakes private and public commissions from his Brighton base, and has experience in teaching courses at a variety of levels.

Participant information

The course is limited to six participants, who will receive practical tuition and hands-on experience. £70 per person.

Please wear old clothing and wear sturdy footwear. All other materials will be provided.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.  It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.  The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
