Carving on a leather belt

The course

Make a made-measure English leather belt, learning the basic preparation, hand stitching and finishing techniques.  Belts can be plain, laced or stamped with a choice of buckles and you will finish with a unique piece of leather work that will last for years to come.

The tutor

Emma O’Driscoll is a leatherworker with nearly twenty years experience, beginning as an apprentice harness maker making agricultural and show harness for draught horses, to making bespoke upholstery for luxury motor car companies.

She runs her own leather working business from her workshop in Charlton, West Sussex.

Participants’ information

Participants are advised that stains will be used, so old clothes and/or an apron are recommended.
All tools will be provided. There will be an opportunity to buy tools if so required

Fee

£60 per person, to include tuition., tea and coffee.  The museum café will be open or you can bring your own packed lunch.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.  It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.  The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
