An introduction to felt making, this one-day course is suitable for beginners. We will produce colourful pieces of handmade felt using dyed fibres.
Hilary Charlesworth is a member of the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen and exhibits her work, details of which can be seen on www.totallytextiles.co.uk. She teaches workshops in a number of textile skills and is a member of the Institute for Learning.
Feltmaking is the oldest form of human-made fabric and felt remains dating from about 700BC have been found in the frozen tombs of nomadic Siberian tribesmen. Handmade felt can have many uses, both practical and decorative.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some experience. Places will be limited to 10.
Equipment:
Please bring an apron, rubber gloves, notebook and a hand towel. Felt making can be messy!
£45 per person per day, including tuition, tools, all course materials and coffees and teas.
The Museum café will be open or participants may bring their own packed lunches.
The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.
