Practice your drawing technique in a variety of media using the Museum’s wonderful buildings and exhibits as your subjects.
The day is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. You will be working out of doors on normal Museum days, so be prepared for interested passers-by.
You will need to bring the following equipment:
Drawing Board 16” x 24” approx
Artist’s quality watercolours and palette
Colours to include: Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Orange, Vermilion Hue, Alizaron Crimson, Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine, Sap Green, Olive Green, Yellow Ochre, Light Red, Burnt Umber, Sepia.
Brushes: Large Wash, No 10 round, ¼1/4” Flat, No 5, No 1
Prolene are probably the cheapest
Pad, block or loose sheets of Watercolour Paper. Arches NOT would be ideal. Size not less than 12” x 16”, the thicker the better, if loose sheets or pad 200lb – 300lb
Roll of masking tape or bulldog clips for fixing paper.
Drawing pencils HB, B
Black waterproof drawing pen
Water pot and water container
Scalpel and blades
Something to sit on
Warm clothing (just in case!)
If you want to use an easel – please bring one
If you have favourite bits and pieces – bring them along

£180 per person, this includes tuition, morning coffee, a light lunch and tea.
Gordon Rushmer is a professional painter with works in the collections of Her Majesty the Queen, the House of Lords, National Library of Wales, H.M. Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Nelson Mandela, ICI, The Royal Marines, The Royal Netherlands Marine Corps and The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment. He exhibits throughout Europe and the USA and works in both watercolours and oils. His most recent commissions include painting as a war artist in Iraq and Afghanistan for the British and Dutch Marines.
His friendly, practical, down-to-earth approach makes his courses both enjoyable and instructive.
The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses. The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation validated by Bournemouth University.
