Leaf Bowl

The course

Learn the basics of woodcarving with this hands-on course whilst carving a leaf-shaped bowl which can be taken home at the end of the day.

The tutors

Jess Jay has been carving for 30+ years and tutored the subject at South Downs College. He has attended courses by renowned woodcarvers Ian Norbury and Michael Painter, and he now currently tutors at two courses in the Fareham and Waterlooville areas.  He is a Member of the Solent Guild of Woodcarvers and Sculptors and also demonstrates at the Museum once a month with the Daywood Carvers. He holds an accredited certificate in tutoring.

John Vardon has been carving for about 18 years, and has attended carving courses by Michael Painter.  He is a Member of the Solent Guild of Woodcarvers and Sculptors and also demonstrates at the Museum once a month with the Daywood Carvers.  He has designed carvings for Havant Borough Council and Victory Museum in Portsmouth Dockyard.

Participant information

Participants should wear suitable clothes and shoes but all tools will be provided.

Fee

£65 per person, to include tuition, teas and coffees. The Museum café will be open or you can bring a packed lunch.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.  It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.  The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation validated by the University of York.
