A mix of theory and practice using the Museum’s team of heavy horses. An introduction to stable care, feeding, harness and safe handling of draught horses and some opportunity for driving.
Mark Buxton is the Museum’s horseman. He has wide experience in working with horses and has recently come to the museum from the Royal Parks, where he was head horseman for 14 years.
A ploughman’s lunch is included, please bring any other refreshment you may need. Everyone must wear sensible warm and waterproof clothing and suitable steel toe-cap footwear and gloves.
£85 per person per day, including tuition and ploughman’s lunch.
If you book and pay for more than four horse courses at one time you may deduct £15 from the total.
The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses. The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation validated by Bournemouth University.
