The course

A chance to learn about the lives of minstrels, listen to demonstrations from a musician who has an extensive collection of musical instruments and a substantial repertoire. This is a day for beginners wishing to learn core traditional instruments such as tin whistle, recorder, pipe and tabor, psaltery, bodhran or bones.

The tutor

Trevor James plays many different instruments ranging from the English bagpipes, gemshorn, gittern and six hole pipe to pipe and tabor, bone clappers and jaws harp. He also makes and plays bowed, hammered and plucked psalteries.
Trevor’s approachable styles inspired people of all ages to enjoy, learn and play historical and traditional music.
Trevor performs at historic sites and events all over the country and has appeared in film, on radion and in the BBC television programme ‘Tales of the Green Valley’. 

Participants information

You will be based for at least part of the day in a historic building or outside, depending on the weather, so please wear suitable clothing and footwear. If you would like to participate, please bring a penny whistle/recorder/drum/bones to play.

Fee

£45 per person, to include all tuition, tea and coffees. The museum café will be open or you can bring a packed lunch.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.  It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.  The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation validated by Bournemouth University.
