The museum depends upon volunteer helpers — and our volunteer helpers very much enjoy their work at the Museum!

Many of our volunteers steward and interpret the exhibit buildings and landscape for our visitors, but there are lots of other opportunities:

  • Collections of artefacts — Cleaning, repairing, accessioning
  • Schools service — Helping with workshops for school children
  • Gardens — Maintaining the six domestic gardens
  • Library/archive — Cataloguing and retrieval
  • Office — General administrative tasks
  • Shop and tickets — Welcoming visitors and serving in the shop
  • Site maintenance — Tidying and maintaining the buildings and site
  • Stables and heavy horses — Working with the horses and running the stables
  • Interpretation — Interpreting the exhibit buildings to the visitor.
  • Watermill — Operating the mill to produce flour and interpreting to the visitor
  • Tudor kitchen — Demonstrate a range of domestic activities in our working Tudor kitchen
  • Craft demonstration — Share your skills and knowledge with our visitors
  • Event management — Lend a hand with managing cars and visitors at our major events

All volunteers are given full training and are responsible to a member of staff. No experience necessary. Your commitment can be anything from a few days a year to several days a week, and you will benefit from unlimited free entry to the Museum and a discount on shop purchases. The Museum runs an extensive training programme which is freely available to all registered volunteers.

We have many wonderful volunteers but we still need more! If you are interested in helping, please contact us on the number below in January 2012:
