Get Knotted!
Guild of Knot Tyers AGM and Knot
Tying Show
10 and 11 May 2008
Weald and Downland Open Air Museum
The International Guild of Knot Tyers Annual General
Meeting and Knot tying Show is to be held at the Weald and Downland Museum
at Singleton on the 10th and 11th May. Members of the Guild from all over
the world will be in attendance including members from Japan, USA, Italy,
Portugal and the Netherlands. The show will be open to Museum visitors and
activities will include a ‘Heaving line’ competition, hands on macramé and a
children’s knot tying activity. We will also have a working rope making
machine that will allow visitors to come and help make rope. Our members
will also be displaying a great array of items of their work and will be
available to ask questions and generally talk about knot tying, its history
and its uses today. The Guild prides itself in being an organisation which
educates the public and is very keen on public interaction. Many of the
Guild members do talks for Guide and Scout groups as well as other adult
organisations all over the country.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The
award-winning Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building
exhibits and is designated by the Government for the outstanding importance
of its collections. Exhibits include a medieval farmstead; a working
watermill producing wholemeal stoneground flour; exhibitions focusing on
traditional building techniques and agriculture; historic gardens, farm
livestock and a working Tudor kitchen. The Museum runs a well-established
programme of courses in building conservation and rural crafts. There is a
café which uses the Museum’s own flour and a shop with gifts and books on
countryside and buildings themes. The modern Downland Gridshell houses the
Museum’s building conservation centre and artefact collection. There is a
daily tour at 1.30pm when the Museum is open, and an appointments system for
visits to the collections for research purposes.
