BARCLAYS DONATION SECURES SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS PROJECT AT
LOCAL MUSEUM

2004 Programme of Activities and Workshops Launched
at the
Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, near Chichester, West Sussex

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum near Chichester, West Sussex, has been given a major boost thanks to a £16,000 donation from Barclays.

The money will be used to fund a series of Special Educational Needs activities and workshops for children of all ages from across the southeast. The funds come from the banks Community Investment Programme, which in 2003 donated £32.8 million, or 1% of UK pre-tax profits.

Jenna Eastlake, Regional Community Manager said, “ This is the third year that Barclays has supported this project and we are delighted to be working so successfully with the Museum.  Barclays is committed to communities and this project is enabling us to help make a real and lasting difference to the local community.”

Richard Harris, Museum Director at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum said, “Thanks to the partnership between Barclays and ourselves, the Museum has been able to help around 1000 children with special educational needs each year through the programme. This year children will be able to attend a series of activity sessions designed for those with special needs, or ‘booster’ days for those in mainstream education. These include medieval, Tudor and Victorian themed days of workshops, as well as a range of tailored activity sessions. ”

In 2003 Barclays global commitment to the community amounted to £32.8 million, which includes 1% of UK pre-tax profits.  As one of the UK’s largest corporate community contributors, the bank aims to achieve real and lasting benefit both for the community and Barclays, by supporting education, social inclusion, people with disabilities, the arts and the environment.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The award-winning Weald & Downland Open Air Museum is England’s leading museum of historic buildings and traditional rural life.  It has over 45 historic building exhibits from town and country and is designated by the Government for the outstanding importance of its collections.  Exhibits include a medieval farmstead; a working Tudor kitchen, a watermill producing stoneground flour; exhibitions focusing on traditional building techniques and agriculture; historic gardens and farm livestock.  The Museum runs a well-established and lively programme of courses in building conservation and rural crafts.  There is a café which uses the Museum’s own produce and a museum shop with gifts and books on countryside and buildings themes.  An important new addition is the multi-award-winning Downland Gridshell, the Museum’s new building conservation centre and artefact store. In addition to a free daily Gridshell tour, visitors may now view the collections by prior appointment with the Curator.
