LEADING LOCAL ARTIST CELEBRATES
40 YEARS OF PAINTING

Gordon Rushmer exhibition
at the
Weald & Downland Open Air Museum
26 September - 1 October

A retrospective exhibition of the paintings by renowned Petersfield artist Gordon Rushmer will take place at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Singleton, near Chichester from Tuesday 26 September to Sunday 1 October. Gordon’s paintings may be found in the collections of Her Majesty The Queen, the House of Lords, the National Library of Wales and Nelson Mandela to name but a few, and the Museum is delighted to have been chosen to host this exhibition celebrating forty years of Gordon’s work.

Gordon has a close association with the Museum, having been Artist in Residence in 2000, with previous exhibitions in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005. Over the last six years he has held a number of very popular five-day Watercolour Workshops, as part of the Museum’s rich programme of courses in Traditional Rural Trades and Crafts. Many of the paintings reflect aspects of the rural heritage and traditions brought to life at the Museum, whose collection of original historic buildings set in 45 glorious acres of the South Downs have provided a wonderful location to inspire many students over the years.

During his forty year career, Gordon has become one of the country’s leading painters working in the traditional style of English watercolour. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to view a number of paintings of rural Sussex, Hampshire and beyond, as well as those with a maritime theme. In addition Gordon has worked as a war artist in many major areas of conflict - his most recent tour being to Iraq in 2005 - plus work in Bosnia, Kosovo, Eritrea and Afghanistan as a painter for the Royal Marines and the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps. His paintings have beenexhibited nationally, in Europe and the USA, and he has undertaken many high profile commissions including the Royal Marines Museum, Cunard and ICI.

The exhibition, in the historic Crawley Hall at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, will be open to all Museum visitors from 26 September to 1 October, during normal opening hours from 10.30am to 6pm.  With paintings showing all aspects of Gordon’s work, there is sure to be something to interest everyone. Museum admission prices are £7.95 (adults), £6.95 (over 60s), £4.25 (children and students) and £21.95 (family).
