The lake and small lower lake were created to provide a source of water for the Lurgashall water mill.  This building is 17th century but it is interpreted as it would have been used in the 19th  century. Here we grind our own wholemeal flour which is used in the museum’s kitchens (you can buy it in the shop!).  Marvel at the sight and sound of the massive wooden machinery.

The lake is home to shoals of carp as well as wild ducks, coots and moorhens and its island provides a safe nesting site for the young. Look out for other birdlife here, or walk out onto the small spit on the lower lake to watch the water wheel turning.
