The course

This day will bring Walter Rose’s superb book “The Village Carpenter” to life with practical demonstrations and talks, detailing the work of the carpenter and joiner in the 19th century.  The Museum’s Whittaker’s Cottages, dating from 1865, will be used as a case study.

The course will look at:

  • The design of Whittaker’s Cottages
The carpenter’s tools, materials, techniques and work.
The joiner’s tools, materials, techniques and work.
Ways to identify and recognise Victorian carpentry and joinery in-situ.
