This is a practical, hands-on course, giving participants the chance to thatch on a practice roof, indoors at ground level, using all the tools, materials and techniques of the craft.
At the end of the day you may even feel able to thatch your own building!
Chris Tomkins is a Master Thatcher living and working in West Sussex. He has lectured on a number of courses at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum and has undertaken the thatching of many of its buildings. He has over 25 years’ experience in different thatching techniques and materials used both in the UK and overseas.
£150 per person, to include tuition, use of tools, materials, teas & coffees and a light lunch.
Places will be limited to 6 participants. Please wear long sleeves, long trousers and suitable sturdy footwear.
The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits. It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses. The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
