This practical day will enable students to produce a flat rendered wall using a traditional lime and sand finish, line in ashlar joints and form quoin stones. There will also be the option for hands-on experience of running mouldings and casting.
The day will cover all the stages of producing a flat rendered wall, including:
How to check background for suction rate
Preparing backgrounds for render work
Purpose and application of the scratch coat
Setting up a level system to ensure a true render finish
The application of the render coat
The rubbing up process
Setting out and forming of quoin stones
Setting out and lining in of ashlar joints
Finishing clean lines of ashlar with different joint systems
George Terry is lecturer in charge of plasterwork at Highbury College. He began a six year plastering apprenticeship in 1963, later becoming a journeyman plasterer. He joined Highbury College in 1981, with the brief of building up the plastering department. Before this he was working for a national company as a maintenance plasterer for their historic properties.
All tools will be provided, but please wear old clothes and sturdy footwear, or bring overalls.
This is an off-site course, taking place entirely at Highbury College Northarbour Centre. Participants will be sent directions to the college on booking.

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.
