The course

A two-day practical course covering:

  • Preparation of flints for laying, knapping and setting out.
  • Advice on tools and lime mortars,
  • Practical flint work in different styles including galletting.
  • An illustrated talk on the geology of flint and examples of local buildings with a visit to West Dean to see different types of flint work.

The tutors

Mark Middleton and Chris Rosier of Berry-Middleton Ltd are experienced in many aspects of flint work, and have worked on many local projects.

Brian Dawson used to work for West Sussex County Council as a conservation architect.  He is author of Flint Buildings of West Sussex, a WSCC publication.  He was inspired to produce the book by the beauty of the county and his wish to celebrate the qualities of the local building materials.

Participant information

Places are limited to 8 participants. Students are asked to wear warm working clothes and safety boots, and bring gloves, a gauging trowel, and if possible, protective goggles.

Fee

£260 per person, to include tuition, teas and coffees, and lunch.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.  It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.  The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
