The course

The care and repair of historic and traditional roof coverings: A day school aimed at architects, surveyors and home owners.  The day will introduce the history, manufacture and decay, care and repair of historic and traditional roof coverings.

The day will cover:

  • Thatch: types; techniques of application; causes of decay; new research into fire safety and dealing with the aftermath of a thatch fire.
  • Tile: history; manufacture; causes of failure; selection of replacement tiles; repair and maintenance.
  • Slate: history and extraction; causes of failure' selection of slates for repair and good fixing practice.
  • Lead: history; recent research into causes of decay and failure and good fixing practice.
  • Rainwater disposal: gutter; rain water down pipes; French drains/ evaporation areas.
  • The day will conclude with a tour around the museum's historic buildings to look at the various roof coverings in context and analyse their condition and potential for decay and the application of appropriate repair systems.

The tutor

Kevin Stubbs is a Historic Buildings Consultant and comes with a background of education, archaeology and building conservation. He was Director of Archaeology for the Test Valley in Hampshire.  Later he moved to the County Council to join the Historic Buildings Bureau, where he became the Principal Buildings Conservation Officer for the County. For eleven years he acted as the Director of a Conservation Centre and now runs his own Historic Building Consultancy and Training Company.

He advises on the repair and maintenance of all historic structures.  He undertakes the historic analysis of buildings and provides training at all levels for the building conservation industry.  This includes the development of historic building technology, traditional materials and hands-on craft training.  Work for Local Government Authorities includes Conservation Area appraisals, historic building condition surveys and feasibility studies.  He has provided training exercises with local communities on the Isle of Wight to raise awareness of their village plans and local heritage interpretation documents and he has provided Traditional Skills Awareness Courses for the Ryde Townscape Heritage Initiative and the Ryde Development Trust.

He lectures for various CPD providers, Universities and national building conservation organisations including SPAB and the Georgian Group.

Fee

£99 per person, to include tuition, teas and coffees and a light lunch.

The Museum

The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic building exhibits.  It is also home to the award winning and innovative Downland Gridshell, which houses a conservation workshop and artefact store, and is also used for many practical courses.  The Museum runs a full programme of courses in historic building conservation and traditional rural trades and crafts, along with MSc programmes in Building Conservation and Timber Building Conservation.
